Why losing weight is a waste of time (and what to aim for instead)
May 04, 2024Losing weight is a waste of time.
Yes, you read that right, losing weight is a waste of time.
If you're struggling with weight loss right now; just stop it.
You're wasting time, money, and energy for absolutely nothing.
You waste potential starving yourself.
You waste money on supplements.
You waste joy restricting yourself.
You waste time counting calories.
You waste happiness by dieting.
You waste energy on exercise.
It will be all for nothing, eventually...
I don't say that I can predict the future. But I can almost guarantee this will happen:
You will lose weight, regain it and still be overweight.
Then, this is going to happen:
- You will hate yourself for the failed attempt
- You will start justifying it
- You will blame external things
- You will lie to yourself about it
This is what I call 'the endless cycle of weight loss and regain'.
It's straight up hell.
Stop doing that to yourself.
There is a better way to get what you truly, deeply desire.
Losing weight isn't a real goal
Let's get this straight; losing weight isn't an actual goal.
You see, you lose weight (and regain it) all the time.
Your bodyweight fluctuates constantly.
Losing weight is no big deal, it's just part of life.
The problem is that over time, you gained more than you lost.
That's why you're overweight.
Nothing more, nothing less.
And that gets me to the point of this newsletter.
Losing weight has no value if you can't stay lean.
Being lean, that's the real goal.
Being lean for life, that's what you should aim for.
But first, you have to get honest with yourself.
The real reason you're overweight
If you're currently overweight, there's one reason.
And one reason only: It's you.
- Your mindset
- Your lifestyle
- Your choices
- Your actions
- Your habits
I know that most people don't want to admit that.
They rather blame external things like situations, their parents, other people, genes, society, the government, the weather, whatever.
But that are just straight up lies.
Hate to break it to you, but it's the truth.
The fact remains, it's all about you. It's always been about you.
And that's a good thing, because you have the power to change it.
And it starts with changing one critical thing:
The mindset shift from 'losing weight' to 'being lean'.
Losing weight vs. Being lean
You know the problem with weight loss?
It's the mindset.
It's a short-term, unrealistic and unsustainable mindset.
Weight loss is all about the fast and easy.
- "How can I lose 20 pounds fast?"
- "What diet works best for fat loss?"
- "What's exercise burns belly fat?"
- "Does intermittent fasting work?"
- "What's the best fat-burner?"
Do you get my point?
I'll tell you a secret:
You can't expect results from work you didn't do.
In other words, you can't beat overweight with temporary efforts.
If you want life changing results, you need changing your life.
That starts with shifting your mindset from short term to long term.
From temporary to lifelong.
From fast to sustainable.
From easy to necessary.
From restricting to recreating.
You have to change your behavior for good.
You have to rebuild your life in a suitable and sustainable way.
Losing weight is about restricting your life.
Being lean is about rebuilding it.
Start here
I understand, rebuilding your life can look intimidating.
But trust me, it's a lot simpler than you might think.
It all starts with observing your behavior.
Here are 3 things to look at:
- Your food intake: what you eat and drink (also alcohol)
- Your activity level: how much you move during the day
- Your training: how often you exercise intentionally
The lean you eats less, moves more, and is in way better shape.
Here's an exercise:
Observe your behavior for one week.
Observe your behavior regarding food, activity, and training.
Write down your observations every day and reflect on it.
After 7 days, make an educated guess about what needs to change.
Change it.
Need help?
I get it, rebuilding your life can feel overwhelming.
